Quite simply, you (the tradie) rely on your bodies for work. Your body is your primary work tool and good health helps your body function at its best. Here at MC Labour we believe our success is our people, which means our people’s health and wellbeing is important to us.
Being a tradie is physically demanding on the body all the time. However, this doesn’t mean being in pain is part of the job too. August is Tradie National Health Month and the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) is raising awareness of the risks posed to those who work in trades and labour occupations.
3 in 5 serious workplace injuries involve a tradie, despite tradies making up only 30 per cent of the Australian workforce*.
One part of the body is used in almost all tasks undertaken by tradies at work – the back. So, it is no surprise back pain is the most common injury experienced. It is important to use the correct techniques when lifting, bending and twisting while undertaking everyday tasks.
Other common injuries for tradies include:
Shoulder issues – repetitive reaching and holding actions with the arms often cause strain and tension in the shoulders.
Knee injuries – again the repetitive nation of bending to the ground and/or kneeling causes problems within the joint.
Ankle sprains – due to the uneven ground found within construction sites the ankles are commonly at risk of injury.
But that’s not all there is to health. It is important to not forget mental health as complete health and wellbeing is mind and body. Resilience revolves around your ability to cope with challenges and adversity and how you bounce back from this. Dealing with the roller coaster of life. There is no shame in going through a hard time and definitely no shame in asking friends, family or even professionals for help.
It’s never too late to think about your health.
